Lessons From Isolation

A personal reflection…

I believe that there are always lessons from our experiences if we allow ourselves to be open to them. For me, the isolation period that COVID-19 presented had many, many lessons. Initially, I felt anxious when my structured routine (which included my own self-care) disappeared - literally overnight - and I worried that my business wouldn’t survive the uncertainty of the days, weeks and months to come.

Then…

Time moved forward and life slowed down (almost completely). We reconnected as a family, laughed more, talked more, walked through our neighbourhood every morning and at night noticing little pockets within our own streets that we hadn’t explored before. We got back in the kitchen whipping up delicious, healthy snacks. We spent time in the garden enjoying the sunny Autumn weather and we ticked off some home maintenance jobs with time on our side and no rush to complete. I added services to my business that I’m passionate about, including Tele-health, and enjoyed time presenting online about self-care with the beautiful GPs in my community. Self-care for me looked like making time for my morning rituals (coffee, mediation and yoga), home facials, manicures and pedicures (which my youngest son, Will, loved!).

So what did I learn?

It’s ok and it’s normal to fuse with my thoughts that trigger anxiety and worry when an unfamiliar situation presents but noticing the thoughts is important because my mind showed up with all or nothing thinking, fortune-telling, disqualifying the positives and catastrophising which really weren’t serving me. What if I had stayed in this thought space, continued to disqualify the positives and not allowed myself to experience the beauty of what isolation afforded me? What I know for sure now is that remaining present is key because the future can’t be known, there is freedom in surrendering and so much to be gained from slowing down (which I intend to hold on to).
